{"id":431,"date":"2013-03-20T14:34:37","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T18:34:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/maniactive.com\/blog\/?p=431"},"modified":"2013-06-12T17:43:12","modified_gmt":"2013-06-12T21:43:12","slug":"which-two-little-words-can-kill-your-confidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maniactive.com\/blog\/which-two-little-words-can-kill-your-confidence\/431","title":{"rendered":"Which two little words can kill your confidence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Kill I think\" src=\"http:\/\/maniactive.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/i-think.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I act as an editor for an opinion piece, I frequently strike the phrase \u201cI think.\u201d I remove those two little words because they can actually kill a speaker\u2019s confidence!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at an example, taken from an attempt to persuade a client.<\/p>\n<p>Read these two sentences aloud:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI think this commercial is going to be extremely effective.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis commercial is going to be extremely effective.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you hear and feel the difference? Which one sounds more confident and persuasive?<\/p>\n<p>The second statement packs much more emotional punch. Consider the \u201cI think&#8230;\u201d phrase as a fluffy pillow that softens the strength of your conviction. The phrase actually weakens the confidence you feel for your own opinion.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re stating your opinion, simply state it. There\u2019s no need to put a fluffy pillow on it. That&#8217;s what my designer friends might call &#8220;inelegant&#8221;.<a href=\"http:\/\/maniactive.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/i-think.png\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luckily, this is an easy fix. The next time you edit a speech, presentation, or essay &#8212; run a quick search for the \u201cI think\u201d phrase on your word processor. Simply removing it can make you feel and sound more confident.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your ears open. Now that you\u2019ve read this post, how many times will you hear or see the phrase \u201cI think\u201d in the next 24 hours?
