The speaker will often verbalize the bullet point with a filler word like &#8220;um, uh, ah, so, or like&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll actually say \u201cum\u201d where the bullet point is!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maniactive.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/verbal-filler.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-315\" title=\"Bullet Points Equal Um\" alt=\"Bullet Points Equal Um\" src=\"http:\/\/maniactive.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/verbal-filler-300x203.png\" width=\"400\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I ask students to share the results of their group brainstorming sessions, most begin by reading their lists. Before every item on their list, they usually say, \u201cum\u2019 or &#8216;ah&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>However, when I ask a student to tell me a story that illustrates a point from the list &#8212; the verbal fillers almost disappear! When we share stories, we\u2019re less likely to use filler words. However, when we read lists, we are far more likely to add filler words.<\/p>\n<p>Go through your presentation and find any areas where you might be reading a list or using bullet points. How you can transform a bullet point list into a story or <span class=\"GRcorrect\" id=\"GRmark_65ae1edc1ed98b77d1f61829138f2dc873ce1e6a_a:0\">a<\/span> even a series of stories?<\/p>\n<p>Look for those opportunities. Eliminating bullet points not only eliminates the \u2018<span class=\"GRcorrect\" id=\"GRmark_89ab806bee71d0986f20e3708684f89710d2b12e_ums\u2019:0\">ums\u2019<\/span>\u00a0from your presentation &#8212; it helps you to better engage your audience with more powerful storytelling.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The next time you watch someone deliver a presentation that\u2019s bullet point heavy &#8211; make a mental note.
